Mission Statement

Picture

The mission of Wausau Urban Community Gardens is to increase the awareness of good health and nutrition through growing one's own food while demonstrating sustainable gardening practices and strengthening neighborhood participation.

Wausau 2nd Street Community Garden

Picture
The project is called the Wausau 2nd Street Community Garden (the garden) and it is an urban community garden of approximately 9000 SF (1/5 acre) in an east-side residential neighborhood in Wausau, along Second Street and adjacent to the Bridge Community Health Clinic.

With funding and volunteers from the community, the garden was created in the spring of 2011.  The land donated by Bridge Community Health Clinic was cleared and beds were created with the help of the Home Depot Team and community volunteers.  Twenty beds and two compost areas were constructed.  A fence and shed were purchased for critter control and storage of tools and supplies for renters to use in cultivating their garden plots.  Of the 20 plots, 17 were rented by community members in which over half are low-income.  Three plots are used to grow a wide variety of produce for donation to the Neighbor’s Place and Marathon County Hunger Coalition.

2013 Construction Update:

Due to the Bridge Community Health Clinic expansion plan beginning in spring 2013, the 2nd Street Community Garden will be temporarily closed for the 2013 season. The garden will reopen in spring 2014, just down the hill from its former location, with more decorative features and vertical gardening options!

East Towne Community Garden

Picture
Wausau Urban Community Gardens newest project is the East Towne Community Garden, located on Jefferson Street in Wausau's east side.  East Towne Community Garden was constructed on June 12, 2012 and covers an area of 60ft x 115ft which allows for the building of 14 raised beds.  A 6ft fence is erected around the perimeter of the garden to help with critter control.  A medium size shed is on site for the safe keeping of the garden tools and supplies.  Out of the 14 raised beds, four are reserved as community plots where harvest will be donated to the Neighbor's Place and Marathon County Hunger Coalition.  All ten plots have been rented out to community members who are already planting and growing their own fruits and vegetables.

Wausau Urban Community Gardens will continue to grow.  The 2012 growing season was a wonderful success with over 250 lbs of produce donated to local community members in need! Classes on gardening basics, family fitness & cooking what you grow helped to educate gardeners on how to live a healthy lifestyle. The gardens enhanced a positive impact on health, nutrition, and quality of life of gardeners and the community.
